Baking for the Bowl
For the last couple of months Jane Weirick, Karen Evenden, and Peggy Russell has been "baking for the bowl." Creating and delivering her special cakes to friends and neighbors. Baking for the Bowl MenuThanks to her efforts, many dollars have been raised to help save Libbey Bowl and at the same time, the awareness of this very important community project has been strengthened. If we are going to preserve this valuable Ojai asset, THE TIME IS NOW to help out and to make your contribution. In order to "sweeten the pot" and encourage more contributions, Jane has recruited myself and Peggy Russell to help. The menu of "sweets" has been expanded so whether you're a chocoholic or a fruit fancier, there is something to excite your pallet. And we're making it easy. Just contact Anna Cho at the Festival's office (805) 646-3117 or acho@libbeybowl.org or give me a call (640-1189) if you have any questions. If you have already made a contribution, thank you very, very much (but you could still consider a special dessert) and thanks for considering the future of Libbey Bowl. Click Here for the Baking for the Bowl Menu. To visit the Save Libbey Bowl Website please visit libbeybowl.org.

CRAZY FOR CITRUS
Sunday, April 25

Used in everything from baking to sauce making, to meat and seafood and vegetable cookery, citrus brings a tangy flavor and aroma to tables around the world. Living in SoCal, we’re lucky to be surrounded by many varieties of citrus so let’s break out our juicers, zesters and peelers and create a fresh take on everyday meals. We’ll discover ways to turn ordinary recipes into vibrant, palate pleasing treats and we’ll travel the globe to sample dishes where citrus really makes the dish…South American Ceviche, Greek Wedding Soup, Thai Seafood & Noodle Salad, Middle Eastern Tabouleh Salad and the very traditional English Lemon Curd. We’ll begin the evening with a sampling of citrus-infused condiments: Red Onion and Orange Compote, Gremolata and Citrus Tapenade. (Warning: Gremolata may soon become your favorite condiment).

TAKE IT OUTSIDE

May, 2008 - Travel to Croatia

Traveling in Croatia
Fabulous view ... Great cappuccino

It was an invitation we could not resist … “Why don’t you and Bill come sailing with us aboard Loose Change? We can sail from Split to Dubrovnik and you can revisit some of your favorite spots, share your memories, renew acquaintances, eat some fabulous Croatian food and sip some wonderful wines.”  How could we possibly say “no?”

It was a week in heaven!  Loose Change is a beautiful yacht, luxuriously equipped and hosts Dean and Carla are fun-loving, easy-going and adventurous friends.  It was in some ways a deja-vu experience – they had spent a week with us when we were originally exploring this coast.  This time, however, we were the guests … it was our “job” to relax, enjoy, share old tales and suggest destinations.

Fine Croatian Wine
A fine glass of wine ... on the deck.

We were certainly curious … things could change a lot in almost four years … would there be so much growth in tourism that the façade of the beautiful villages would be painfully changed?  Would the crowds of tourists outnumber the locals?  And perhaps most significantly from my perspective would the food become so internationalized that our favorite dishes would no longer be available?

From the moment we landed at the Split airport, we knew we were back in one of our favorite countries … friendly “dobar dans” filled the air and the customs and immigrations officials were predictably friendly and welcoming.  But we also recognized that things had changed … the very busy and crowded airport had grown and the heavy traffic heading to Split was a clear indicator that business and busyness in Croatia have definitely increased.

But the week turned out to be totally fabulous!  It could not have been more fun!  We sailed comfortably in warm, gentle breezes, visited favorite anchorages – re-kindling my dreams of sitting quietly at anchor in Polace Harbor on Mljet or Loviste on the Peljesac, spent time in my beloved Trogir and Dubrovnik, ate fabulous food and sipped liters of very nice wine.

Yes, the crowds had arrived … even in late May … but they were mostly concentrated in Dubrovnik and mostly off the cruise ships.  We still enjoyed our little villages and we still had quiet evenings in our favorite anchorages.  Sure, there would be many, many more charter boats in July and August and certainly, securing moorage in favorite harbors would prove to be

difficult but careful planning and careful timing will enable those who choose to set sail during the summer months a very pleasurable vacation.

And yes, maybe the shop windows are filled with more tee shirts but there are still plenty of konobas serving tasty local dishes, lots of cafes where you can sit and linger over a rich cappuccino or sip a cold pivo and plenty of smiles and warm dobar dans from the locals.  I can’t wait to go back again!
